eIDAS Regulation: E-Signatures in the European Union

Understanding the EU regulatory framework for electronic signatures and trust services.

Michael Torres

CTO & Co-founder

What is eIDAS?

The eIDAS Regulation (Electronic Identification, Authentication and Trust Services) is an EU regulation that provides a legal framework for electronic signatures, seals, timestamps, and other trust services across all EU member states.

Three Levels of Electronic Signatures

Simple Electronic Signature (SES)

  • Basic level, no specific requirements
  • Suitable for low-risk transactions
  • Example: Typed name in an email
  • Advanced Electronic Signature (AES)

  • Uniquely linked to the signatory
  • Capable of identifying the signatory
  • Created using data under sole control
  • Linked to data to detect changes
  • Qualified Electronic Signature (QES)

  • Highest level of assurance
  • Created by a qualified signature creation device
  • Based on a qualified certificate
  • Legally equivalent to handwritten signatures
  • When to Use Each Level

    Cross-Border Recognition

One of the key benefits of eIDAS is mutual recognition across EU member states. A qualified electronic signature issued in Germany is valid in France, Italy, Spain, and all other EU countries.

    SignFlow and eIDAS

SignFlow supports all three levels of electronic signatures and is compliant with eIDAS requirements. Enterprise customers can access QES through our certified partners.
